NextGen AMS
What does the grid operator do when the first generation of AMS reaches end of life?
The first generation of AMS meters was installed on Hvaler in 2010. From 2026 they lose both system support from the supplier and mobile coverage, and the project was to work out what should then be done.
Norgesnett wanted to see whether new technology could help make better use of existing infrastructure, and give a better customer experience in the years ahead.

- Duration: September 2023 to July 2026
- Tender process in Europe

From survey to chosen platform
Technology survey
The work began by surveying what new technology had emerged in Europe, and what the trends were for the next generation of AMS.
New requirement specification
A new requirement specification was drawn up, with emphasis on making use of existing infrastructure and improving the customer experience.
Tender in Europe
The tender process was run in Europe. Itron won with its new HW5 platform with distributed intelligence, for replacement at around 10,000 customers initially.
On to the industry and to Hvaler
The results were reported to the AMS 2.0 working group under Fornybar Norge, which is looking at what the requirements for AMS meters should be from 2030. By summer 2026 the project had reached the start of meter replacement on Hvaler.
